Festival Of Light, Legopalooza, Seagulls and Minimum Chips This Weekend!

Indoor activity this week – bogan scrabble. It’s like regular scrabble but you have to use bogan words. You can play it at home or you can play it with friends over a jug or two of VB at your local. If you don’t have a local you should move. Places that you should consider moving near include The Prudence in North Melbourne and The Union in Collingwood.

Bright City Lights
Surveys say the amount of people going into the CBD in winter drops by 11%. So Melbourne City Council have enlisted the Chris Judd of festivals, Robyn Archer, to create a festival all about lights to bring people back into the city. Some of it sounds a bit naff but some of it sounds fun and all of it is free.

Let’s Go
Nathan Sawaya was once a lawyer, he quit to play with Lego. It worked out rather well for him. Over the past four years his exhibition The Art of the Brick has been touring the US, amazing and inspiring young and old alike. Now it’s coming to Australia. Nathan will be attending the opening on June 2 held, fittingly enough, at Fed Square. The exhibition will run until August, after then I can only assume his older brother will come in and knock everything over.

Maxims of Behavior
From June 1st  after dark,  an ever-changing montage of abstract images will animate the surface of the Royal Mail House on the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets. I don’t know why it’s called Maxims of Behavior, but I guess Pretty Lights On Building doesn’t sound half as cool. It’s around until September.

Seagull, Chips, Footy, Baseball, Good Earthquake, Bad Tsunami
This Sunday Seagull are playing with Great Earthquake and Footy as part of a split June residency at The Grace. Patinka-Cha-Cha will play the final two weeks. The last week of June Nick Huggins and Francolin play and that excites me a bit, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself. In some kind of freakish and slightly awkward coincidental word play just down the road Minimum Chips will be playing with Baseball at The Tote in a fundraiser to help Japan as devastation from the recent Tsunami/Earthquake continues.
