Saucy Satay

When it comes to food there are a few simple pleasures I hold sacred: eating jelly without chewing, popping an entire bubble-gum bubble in my mouth, sliding hot meat off a stick ‘tween my teeth. So when a friend told me about Saucy Satay, a new eatery specialising in skewered meats grilled over charcoal, I knew I had to check it out.

After scanning the menu and printing off some vouchers from their Facebook page, my friend and I headed off to see what all the Satay fuss was about.

The concept is simple: nine different meat skewers plus one vegetarian option, which can be purchased individually or in sets. The skewers range from kofta-style minced meat to quality cuts of beef rump, lamb fillet and chicken breast. Each of the skewers has a special sauce and culinary influence which dictates what kind of flavour (and heat) experience you’ll have.

As an indecisive person I found the choice a little overwhelming, and compensated by ordering half the menu. Bulgogi: Korean style tender beef rump – covered in sesame seeds and a sweet marinade. North African: tender lamb, African spices, fresh herbs and a cooling yoghurt sauce. Hot Tikka: chicken breast in a spicy Tikka Masala sauce. Balilicious: minced chicken with Balinese spices and coconut.

I still can’t decide my favourite, so I’ll have to go back and try the rest of the menu to be sure. One thing is certain; the next barbecue I host will have the most inspired skewers ever.
