Welcome to Mirosuna: a heavenly space for mindfulness and meditation, designed to help you ascend to a higher plane of being. Opening their serene doors in the midst of various Melbourne COVID lockdowns, the studio’s philosophy is to help the world live more consciously every day – with a twist. Their practice is accessible and is ‘without the woo’, and it is typically accompanied by a fresh G&T or a couple of glasses of Cab Sav. Milk Bar experienced Mirosuna’s Wine and Wind Down to seek inner peace.

How was our visit? Let’s re-create the vibe. Picture ethereal music humming, and burning incense perforating the space. We exchanged our proletarian shoes for comfortable slippers. The studio was speckled with an array of candles and gemstone-infused clearing bowls. Individual ‘zen’ stations contained a suede stretching mat, a comfortable cushion or two, a custom-made couch-turn-bed and a privacy curtain. Immediately, I felt like I was emotionally melting. After selecting a glass of red, the class was ready to begin.

Founder Sally Kellett led the class, poised with positivity, wisdom and killer stretching techniques. For Sally, mindfulness is more than chanting ommm in a circle. ‘For me, it’s about bringing mindfulness into the everyday, and if that involves a glass of gin, or a fabulous soundtrack in order for people to connect to their practice, then that’s what Mirosuna is all about,’ comments Sally.

Sally’s connection to mindfulness stretches back to her teenage years. Ditching the rat race of the corporate world in 2019, Sally consolidated her practice at Truc Lam Monastery in Vietnam, practising the craft with 70 nuns. Drawing on her learned teachings of Zen Buddhism, Sally believes in creating a truly unique experience for enthusiasts and doesn’t use a script – none of the team at Mirosuna do.

The stunning architectural-designed space is decked out to enhance the experience. Sustainable cork flooring promotes softness under the foot, the custom lights and acoustics heighten the music, and the composition of suede means that human sweat doesn’t seep into the fabric.

The two-hour Wine and Wind Down class can be described as a social gathering combined with body movement – meaning gruelling stretches – to release built-up tension and tight muscles, all while sipping a glass or two of wine. If wine isn’t your vibe, alternates include still or sparkling water, or soothing chrysanthemum tea.

The class turned out to be quite social and comfortable. Sally successfully imbued the room with a safe, serene and sincere mood. The group all took turns to talk about their own mindfulness practice, which really broke the ice. While I consider myself quite nimble and flexible, Sally definitely succeeded in putting the group through the ringer when it came to the stretch poses. Of course, Sally instructed the group to go at their own pace and suggested modified stretches for all levels. The class then concluded with a savasana and guided meditation.

At the end, the group all agreed that the class felt like a ‘brain holiday’, an opportunity to truly switch off. The vibe was so effective that it was like the world outside didn’t exist. Beyond the Wine and Wind Down class, Mirosuna offers a range of sound meditation, movement and mindfulness classes including Sleep Techniques, Mindfulness Tea Journey and Friday night Yin and Tonic (a more upbeat alternative to the wine class).

Mirosuna is a sensory experience that I cannot recommend enough – it has a convert in me. I can’t wait to visit again.
