Everyone loves pizza. People also like cheap things. And beer. You’ll find all three in abundance at Jimmi Jamz.

First opened in Elwood and now with an outpost in East Brunswick, Jimmi Jamz doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t. This is DOC pizza and you won’t find white tableclothes within 50 paces, what you do get is good pizza that’s cheap enough to spend the change on a jug of beer.

I visited on a Monday night and JJ’s is bustling with a mainly student crowd. It reminds me of Bimbo’s – but it smells better and has less sticky carpet. On the menu are ten ‘house’ pizzas ($6.90 – $9.90) covering all the regular bases and six ‘board’ pizzas that come with more adventurous toppings like Korean beef BBQ and balsamic beetroot.

Rounding off the menu are pastas and brioche bun sliders.

My pal and I tried the Moroccan lamb pizza with lemon, yogurt and pine nuts ($9.9) and and saganaki pizza with rosemary roasted potatos ($8.9). Large enough to satisfy one without feeling stuffed, the pizza base was pleasantly chewy and robust enough not to flop when picked up. I thought the sharpness of the saganaki worked with the milder flavour of the spuds, while the Moroccan lamb had interesting textures but needed stronger flavours. Overall both we perfectly serviceable, especially when washed down with some lager.

We ended with pizza for dessert, in this case the Oreo puff pizza that came loaded with crushed Oreo’s, hazelnut chocolate sauce ($7.9). I’m not normally a fan of sweet pizzas but this was the best dish of the night, the salty base making friends with the sweet toppings. And Oreas are always welcome.

For cheap pizza and beer in a bustling venue at most hours of the day, Jimmi J’s earns its slice.
