Based in the heart of South Yarra, Ekeko is bringing the life of Peru right to Melbourne’s doorstep.

It may sound a bit unusual – I’d have to say I hadn’t heard of Peruvian cuisine here in Melbourne before – but Ekeko is making a bold statement. Not only is Ekeko giving Melbourne the classic flavours from Peru, but they are also providing an experience that brings together all the flavours of the world. You will find that some of the menu is infused with cuisines from China (lomo saltado), Italy (fettuccine huancania with pollada) and more, which makes it that much more inviting.

The ceviche classico, as the name suggests, is one of Peru’s most well-known and traditional dishes. The star of the dish is definitely the sustainable local white fish cured in leche de tigre (also known as tiger milk). Combined with the candied sweet potato, creates quite a unique flavour, that, as cliché as it is, literally melted in my mouth.

To top off the evening there were the picarones, which are sweet potato and pumpkin donuts accompanied by a chancaca syrup. The combination may not sound so sweet, but the chancaca syrup has a thick fig flavour, that completes the dining experience as well as leaving you with a desire for a little more.

Last but not least, were the cocktails on offer! Don’t think we forgot to catch a taste of the different spirits and flavours of the traditional cocktails Ekeko has to offer. If you are after something spicy, the Spiced Chancaca Sour is the choice for you. The spice hits you with the first sip but goes down so smoothly, that you forget it even had a kick to it. If you are more of a sweet tooth, I would recommend the Rocoto Sour. The Rocoto-infused pisco combined with the chuncho bitters makes for a tasty drink to accompany any of the classic dishes.

The venue has great music, friendly staff, and a quiet intimate courtyard that is the perfect place for date nights or small groups. With beautifully painted art on the walls, bright and vibrant furniture, and heating for the upcoming winter nights, Ekeko is a place you will want to visit. Unfortunately they don’t have any of the traditional alpaca or guinea pig on the menu – which means you might just have to head to Peru to taste that for yourself.
