Oktoberfest at Munich Brauhaus

Fun fact: did you know the first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to honour a royal wedding? Reset your mind to present-day Melbourne and Munich Brauhaus and The Bavarian are throwing the biggest, bodacious and beer-filled Oktoberfest in 2019. Kicking off from Saturday, 21 September to Sunday, 27 October, expect to see a little more Lederhosen than you usually do! Milk Bar is here to give you a run through of all the shenanigans.

A brightly coloured street party, including the ceremonial tapping of the first Oktoberfest beer keg, will be held on Saturday, 21 September. The parade will feature costumed entertainers, traditional live music, and did we mention colour?  When it comes to food, the options are plentiful. You can choose between two Oktoberfest-themed set menus. The $79 per person set menu features three courses of signature Bavarian dishes – think lots of meat – a 1-litre stein of beer, a shot of schnapps, and a lux showbag. The $49 per person set menu features items created specifically for Oktoberfest. So expect to lavish over a shredded sausage salad, known as wursalat, with pickled cucumber, onions and Swiss cheese; a tafel spitz (corned beef brisket with potatoes, horseradish veloute, sauerkraut and minced apple); and kaiserschmarrn (a dessert of smashed pancake drizzled with butterscotch and almonds). The thought of that kills me, marrn.

If your preferences are to party, then you can choose any of the four themed dress-up parties. They include the Chicken dance party (Saturday, 28 September); the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Steins party (Saturday, 5 October); the Brother’s Grimm party (Saturday, 12 October); and the Oktober-football-fest party (Saturday, 19 October). Don your favourite World Cup jersey, cast a love spell with your wand, or come prepared knowing all the chicken dance moves.

Grab your mates, prepare to drink steins of Löwenbrau and celebrate Oktoberfest at the Munich Brauhaus at South Wharf. Prost!
