The intoxicating voice of Gena Rose Bruce is illustrated through her new album Can’t Make You Love Me. Drawing inspiration from personal events, Bruce has written an enticing and impressive feat of lyrics dispersed throughout the contemporary and heartfelt album.

Among the eleven songs, Can’t Make You Love Me includes tracks ‘Rearview’ and ‘Angel Face’. These two songs best illustrate the depth and soul Gena pours into her work, all the while making it a relatable and memorable listening experience. The lyrics are complemented by the addition of funky and impassioned beats. While outwardly modern, the album carries a certain nostalgic vibe throughout. Gena describes her new album as, ‘heartbreaking lyrics with twisted guitar riffs and spacey synths.’

Recently signed to Australian record label Dot Dash, alongside some of Australia’s greatest artists, Gena disclosed her feelings on the momentous occasion.

‘I feel very lucky to be a part of such a supporting family. I feel Dot Dash really champion their artist vision and uniqueness, that’s what really drew me to them. I’m also huge fans of Gabriella Cohen and Methyl Ethel so to share a label with them is exciting.’

Although Gena has never had much formal singing training, her voice is naturally unique and stirring. The upbeat harmony and moving lyrics featured in Can’t Make You Love Me are a fitting match for her vocals. Gena has been writing lyrics since she was eight years old and started taking her music more seriously during high school. The intensity shines through Gena’s music, portraying just how much heart is in each lyric and beat.

Gena’s songwriting process varies depending on the song she writes. She acknowledges this for her latest track ‘Angel Face’ with the importance of experimentation. ‘It is different each time, but for ‘Angel Face’, I originally wrote it on guitar. It wasn’t until the production [that] we removed all the guitars, changing the whole feel. I think the most important thing is being open in production,’ she says.

Gena has recently performed around the country, including Northcote Social Club on Wednesday, 31 July.
