Meet Me Under the Clock

Melbourne’s hidden gem, Clock’s Green Light Diner, is the perfect setting to host the ultimate New York City seafood experience. This MEL&NYC event branches from the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and it allows us to celebrate the greatest things in life, Melbourne, New York and Food. Meet Me Under the Clock is a rare chance to experience classic New York cuisine with a rejuvenated and fresh vibe which only Melbourne can offer.

As you set foot inside the conveniently located Clocks, just outside of Flinders Street train station, you are transported to another time. The interior has recreated the look of a 1920s train station. Elegant globe lights curl over dark leather couches and booth seating. The railway layout of the dining area, the use of brass, marble, copper and wood finishes create a comforting old-world charm.

To begin, a Regal Rouge aperitif cocktail is an excellent way to stimulate ones appetite and prepare for the first course of the evening, which was a generous serve of fresh oysters. Very appropriate as the menu is inspired by New York City’s famous Oyster Bar.

Opening its doors over 100 years ago, the Oyster Bar located on the lower level of Grand Central Terminal, it was a place people frequented to witness the new engineering marvel. The same can be said for Melbourne’s own well-recognised, beloved dome and arched entrance that is Flinders Street Station. Both establishments have, throughout their many years of service, undergone many refurbishings and have come to be the cultural icons of their cities.

‘Both icons of mass transit and architectural history, NYC’s Grand Central and Melbourne’s Flinders St Station are the beating heart of their respective cities,’ the Meet me under the Clocks event proclaims.

The second course during the dining experience is a hearty bowl of New England clam chowder. This flavourful dish is enough to warm anyone on a cold, wintery Melbourne evening. This one-pot wonder features a mouth-watering mix of clams, bacon and potato. A portion of fried popcorn shrimp follows shortly after, which doesn’t last long due to its sheer deliciousness.

Last, but most definitely not least, the evening concluded with Maine Lobster served in a fresh baguette with a mixture of fresh Waldorf salad and side of potato chips (baked, not fried). If this dish doesn’t scream American dining, I don’t know what will – your tastebuds are going to thank you later!

Spreading across the city from June to October 2018, the MEL&NYC festival is supported by the Victorian Government to connect two cities that inspire creativity and innovation through the arts and community-led events. Don’t miss your chance to experience New York, Melbourne style. For more information and to see what’s on visitmelnyc.com

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
