The blue neon sign at Rebel Blue, down the Windsor end of Chapel Street, heralds a refreshing take on the usual food dished up at a lot of Greek restaurants. Opening just over two months ago, Rebel Blue offers incredible home-style food with a fancy twist, combining fresh food with simple yet intense flavours, in a modern industrial-style setting. Rebel Blue was the name of a notorious group of Greek Windsor toughs in the 1930s and the delicious menu takes inspiration from what the first Greek immigrants brought to Melbourne before all the late-night souvlaki joints set up shop.

The dishes are beautifully presented and they taste just as good as they look. There’s an amazing ‘on the stick’ section with a unique take on squid, king prawn, pork, lamb, chicken and vegetarian skewers. And the side dishes are no mere afterthought. The menu’s packed with mouthwatering veggie dishes and chargrilled seafood, offering a fresh spin on traditional Greek food. There’s nothing stereotypical about this menu: think broccoli layered with creamy feta and almond flakes, and tomatoes stuffed with wild rice, pine nuts and yoghurt. And three – yes I said three – different takes on saganaki (grilled cheese).

The menu is designed to be shared, perfect for a group of friends or an intimate dinner. There’s an exciting drinks menu as well. The cocktails are to die for – it’s worth going for the ‘Mimi The Fuzz’ cocktail alone, a heavenly mix of watermelon, gin and aperol. There’s also an extensive wine list, including an impressive selection straight from Greece.

Rebel Blue is taking Chapel Street by storm. This place fills up quick so it’s best to book a table before arriving to avoid missing out. And with its stunning menu, great service and really cool vibe, you’ll definitely want to get a table.
