Are you thinking about a summer sojourn to Spain later this year? Let the 2018 Spanish Film Festival give you some reel inspiración as you fall in love with the glittering night skyline of Barcelona, the austere capital of Madrid, or the beaches at San Sebastian. The Melbourne leg of the festival ends on Sunday, 6 May, so Milk Bar Mag is here to hand you some sangria as you read through our top picks.

The twenty-day festival closes with Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth at the Astor Theatre. Celebrate del Toro’s recent string of accolades with his beloved dark fairy-tale that is set in 1944, during the Spanish Civil War, and follows young Ofelia and her quest to conquer a magical realm.

Hit-drama Loving Pablo attempts to sketch drug lord Pablo Escobar in a different shade, unpacking his long-time romance with Virginia Vallejo. Adapted from her page-turning memoir, Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar, the film traces her admiration and infatuation for the man that declared war against the Colombian government and her eventual collaboration with American authorities to bring Escobar down. Starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, the film explores the socio-political circumstances that paved the path of Escobar’s ascent.

Take your mind back to Central America, 1540. The New World is an odyssey full of peril and fear, and once ashore, the path to El Dorado is plagued by violence, brutality and the unknown. Gold is the big-budget film that follows a group of Spanish deserters who trek through the terrain in search for oro. (If they don’t succumb to severe weather conditions, wild animals, savage locals and a group of soldiers first.)

To celebrate, Milk Bar Mag is giving away 10 FREE double passes to this year’s festival. All you need do is email ross@milkbarmag.com with the subject line ‘Spanish Film Festival’ and be sure to include your name and postal address. Then, relax, enjoy some paella and we will let you know if the double passes are yours.
