Festival of Questions

It is said that questions are more important than answers – that they cure ignorance and demonstrate true wisdom. The Wheeler Centre invites you to a day of questioning, of querying, of wondering and of asking ‘why?’ The Festival of Questions brings together great thinkers and the quick-witted, and across four sessions, issues of culture, class, climate, politics, philosophy and feminism will be unpacked and fleshed out.

‘Questions for the Nation’ takes on the tough questions – those that need to be faced head-on. Should there be a citizenship test to buy property in Australia? Should the public really have a say about ‘marriage equality’? As Australians, who do we want to be and how are we going to get there? Once the panellists have had their say, it’s over to you to have yours.

‘What is right? What is left?’ navigates the maze that is our current political spectrum. Trump and Brexit have confused things for us and closer to home, Pauline Hanson now represents the extreme right. What kind of leadership can emerge in a new political landscape, and where do we look for hope?

‘Philosophical Fight Club’ sees intellectual heavyweights wrestle with the biggest, ugliest and toughest philosophical dilemmas facing Australians today. Join panellists for a session of scrutiny, speculation, supposition and squabbling as they delve into the spikiest moral problems of our time. What role should the state play in family and intimate relationships? Should we keep reproducing when the planet is under strain?

‘What the hell? The Handmaid’s Tale in 2017’ concludes the festival with a session inspired by our fascination with the most talked about TV series of the year. Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale disturbed our imaginations and forced us to draw parallels with the world we live in today. Why has Margaret Atwood’s uniquely disturbing vision of feminist dystopia struck such a chord in 2017?

The day-long festival runs on Sunday, 15 October. Tickets can be purchased for individual sessions or a full day pass. Open your minds to discussion that will dissect the core from which your ethics, morals and values are drawn. For how do we know if we do not ask?
