Love: Art of Emotion 1400–1800

The concept of love has always been a complex one, as has capturing the meaning through various creations of art. The National Gallery of Victoria aims to breathe life into beautiful artistic representations of love by showcasing more than 200 of its International Collection in its brand new Love: Art of Emotion 1400–1800 exhibit.

Visitors will get to witness love through the scope of human experience, which includes themes of familial relationships, friendship, religious devotion, patriotism, altruism, narcissism, materialism and nostalgia. The depth of these ideas has been captured in paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings, as well as costumes, furniture and religious artefacts.

You can experience Vivianni’s exquisite The Garden of Love painting, and examine tiny pieces of jewellery that were worn against the body as love tokens or in memoriam. All of these works of art explore layered notions of public display and private emotion, ostentation and intimacy, performance and feeling.

Love: Art of Emotion truly delves into the array of emotions that accompany the feeling of love, and how they have evolved throughout artistic portrayals dated from the Medieval to the Romantic period.
