LIMB: The Label

Andria Kiefer and Sinead Hargreaves may be old friends, but their business partnership is only new. The idea for their label began in March this year when the two women decided that if they wanted to best utilise their skills and maintain creative control, they needed to go out on their own. And thus LIMB was born.

‘We looked at the gaps in Melbourne fashion and decided that we didn’t want to work for someone else when we could create our own designs’, said Kiefer. While the pair acknowledges that there are some great Melbourne-based designers and labels that they can resonate with, they feel that the industry is dwindling and therefore believe that fresh contributions are important.

Drawing inspiration from abstract, Picasso-esque patterns and pastel sunsets over natural desert landscapes, LIMB’s debut line ‘Abstract Impression’ combines a palette of textured greens, pinks and plenty of black with versatile designs for any silhouette.

LIMB aims to appeal to a vast audience of women of all ages, and of all shapes and sizes. Many of the designs are adjustable, reversible, and season-less. Meaning that, LIMB pieces are versatile enough to be adapted into multiple outfits that can be worn all year round.

‘All Melbourne’s small labels are special in their own way, we just want the women who wear our clothing to feel comfortable, yet understatedly stylish and beautiful, and not at all ostentatious.’

LIMB strives to create garments that challenge the consumerist fast-fashion that our society has become so prone to. They aim to do this by designing and producing quality timeless pieces that will remain in your wardrobe indefinitely. Longevity, durability, and a slowing down of fashion are all things that LIMB values. They endeavor to use locally made materials as often as possible, with some of their fabrics being made as close as Sunshine.

Customers will be paying for quality, and the knowledge that the pieces have been created with its owner in mind, rather than their wallets. A challenging aspect for the two women behind the brand has been navigating their way around the Melbourne fashion and textile industry.

Kiefer, after completing her Bachelor of Applied Science in Fashion Technology at RMIT, spent last year interning in New York for several labels including Apiece Apart, where she was able to just run down the streets of Manhattan to find a sample. In contrast, here in Melbourne you ‘might need to drive twenty-five kilometres out of the city to find what you need’.

Hargreaves works as a freelance fashion stylist as well as a stylist for The Styling Agency, and has found that her love of Melbourne’s arts and culture has lead her to regularly resist the frequent advice she receives to move to Sydney, where there may be more career opportunities. Click here to see some of her work.

LIMB will be holding its launch party on Friday 4th September, at Allpress Studio in Collingwood. The evening will also include designs from the Melbourne-based accessories label Two Sourced and Emily Farbrother, as well as the Move Your Feet DJ’s, who will be playing all night. To check out more of what LIMB has to offer, see their Pozible campaign.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
