Jimmy Grants

George Calombaris has escaped the Masterchef tasting kitchen to bring us Hellenic grub from the homeland at new souvlaki house Jimmy Grants (immi-grants — get it?). This fun and casual eatery comes at a fraction of the cost of Calombaris’ other endeavours (which include Gazi, St Katherine’s, Mama Baba and Hellenic Republic), but makes no sacrifice on quality.

Available for lunch, dinner or takeaway, food centres on Greek-stronghold the souvlaki, alongside a small offering of salads, desserts, and alcoholic bevies. It’s a short and sharp menu, but it’s done well.

There’s chicken, lamb, prawn or vego souvlaki options, but if you’re indecisive you’ll appreciate the Bonegilla ($8.50) — a succulent combo of chicken, lamb, mustard aioli, onion, parsley and chips. Yes, chips stuffed right in with the other good stuff. However, as a little girl with a big appetite, I’d need a couple of these to get me through to my next feed (they’re pretty much snack size).

To supplement the meal, the taramasalata (fish roe dip, $5) is off-the-chart with flavour — be sure to sop it up with some puffy pita ($2.50). To finish, the Greek doughnuts with walnuts and honey ($6) will send your diabetic friends to an early grave, but they’ll die with a smile.

Exposed brick-work and painted murals give the venue a rustic vibe, fitting with the Fitzroy location. Perfect for a drink and a quick pre-gig feed.
