Loco for Crazy Wings

Crazy Wings is an inconspicuous little eatery on Russell Street with a bustling interior. You are given a pen and a piece of paper that doubles as the menu and your order form. Placing quantities next to my desired menu items on an empty stomach was like walking a rabid dog.

Somehow I tamed the beast and made only four selections. From what I could make out, all of the food was skewer-based so I chose the Original Chicken Wings ($2.00), Crazy Wings ($2.50), Enoki mushrooms wrapped in bean curd skins ($5.00) and the Pork Belly ($1.80). Perhaps I should have clarified what the latter would be — it turned out to be a layer of rubbery skin which made me think of The Silence of the Lambs.

My selections were marinated, grilled and liberally coated in a chilli powder mix for a little kick. When the waitress handed me my take away bag she said ‘it will be very hot’ but I, stupidly, didn’t heed her warning.

Back at work I enjoyed the soft crunch of the mushrooms, the steamy char-grilled original wings and thankfully left the crazy wings ’til last. They were hands down the hottest thing I have ever put in my mouth — two bites and I was in a veritable chilli hell. My co-workers proceeded to call me a wuss and laugh at my misfortune, but like an evil Mary Poppins I made them take their fiery medicine sans sugar to wash it down. I goaded four colleagues into trying the wings and all had similar teary reactions — one going so far as to cuss like a sailor at me in the heat of the moment.

So, if you have a high tolerance for chilli, I am firing up the chilli signal in the sky above Crazy Wings. Ask yourself: Can you handle the heat?
