Made in China 2.0

Intriguing and insightful, Made in China 2.0 gives audiences an in-depth look into what it’s truly like to be “made in China.”

This immersive theatre production comes from the creative genius of one of Beijing’s experimental theatre directors, Wang Chong 王翀. Over the years, Wang has been celebrated for his visionary pieces of classic and contemporary pieces. After boasting a sell-out season of Little Emperors 小皇帝 in 2017 (written by Lachlan Philpott), Made in China 2.0 is Wang’s return to the Malthouse Theatre in collaboration with co-director Emma Valente.

Made in China 2.0 largely focuses on Wang’s own experiences as a director in China and Australia. He takes the audience on an extremely intimate journey of his childhood and his career amongst bursts of Chinese history. Wang engages with the audience throughout the performance as we learn and discover the risks associated with being an artist in China. The show strictly bans photography or video, as Wang explains the exposure of this performance could pose dangers to him in future. The stage also features minimal props with only one being a video camera, which Wang utilises this creatively throughout the performance.

This personal manifesto truly is one of a kind. It’s a monologue performance that brings the audience along for this personal voyage. Wang is an extremely charismatic performer and his talent, expertise and precision truly shines through the solo production. We feel his fear within his past artistic risks and the passion he has for his craft. He’s emotive, sensitive and the audience experiences each and every breath he takes in sharing his story.

Made in China 2.0 is on until 19th March at Malthouse Theatre. Be sure to mark your calendars and book tickets below for this unforgettable performance.
