Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

Overflowing with intensity, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is all set for an amusing night out with the family. It’s fun; it’s fruity; it’s feel-good; it’s flashy – but most of all, it is technicolour.

Joseph has not graced the Australian stage in over 30 years so it is refreshing to see him back at it. Although slightly outdated and a bit OTT for many, this musical is a great one for the children. From biblical beginnings, Tim Rice’s classic follows Joseph, who has a knack for interpreting dreams with added prophecy. We see him go through the ups and downs of having this gift, from the betrayal of his 11 brothers to receiving fortune from a great pharaoh. If you’re not familiar with the original tale, fret not, as this take is nothing like the bible.

Boasting an all-star Australian cast, featuring beloved Paulini (Australian Idol, Young Divas) and Euan Fistrovic Doidge (Cruel Intentions, Fun Home) as the leads – you’ll find singers, dancers and actors of all ages among the troupe. Spot Aussie ex-footballer Shane Crawford as the Pharaoh also. Although not a performer and possibly cast purely for fandom and celebrity, Crawford made the audience laugh and brought in the crowd for opening night.

The musical is packed with colour and eye-catching costumes that display stereotypical motifs. This style of costuming and performance doesn’t really fly in 2022, evidently more common back in 1967 when the original production by Webber and Rice was crafted.  Even though this musical lacks in many ways – with a slight inadequacy of rehearsal, slipping wigs and unsewn hems – the audience can enjoy Andrew Lloyd Webber and Time Rice’s iconic theatre classics such as ‘Close Every Door To Me’, ‘Any Dream Will Do’, ‘There’s One More Angel in Heaven’ and of course ‘Go, Go, Go Joseph’.

The humour and the heart of this musical will have you singing all through the week, so go go go and grab your tickets for a night of parody, satire, laughter and colour.
