The days are shorter, the nights are colder, so let Bass & Flinders’ new Heartbreak Pinot Noir Gin provide the much-needed solace you seek this autumn. The delectable pinot gin is a marriage between classic and native Australian botanicals and brooding Pinot grape. After much fanfare with their inaugural Pinot Gin last year, let’s find out why and how the 2022 label is set to break hearts.

Founded in 2009, Bass & Flinders Distillery was the first to pop up on the Mornington Peninsula and is driven by its desire to create artisanal gins, brandies and liqueurs. Drawing inspiration from the region where the sea meets the wine-growing hinterland, the distillery handcrafts their grape-based eau de vie spirit on-site, using traditional methods, in a process the French call terroir.

‘The inaugural release of our gin was an eye-opener for us, consumers loved the gin for both their own enjoyment and for gifting; bars loved it for on-premises [sic] mixing, cocktails and classic spirit mixers … so we decided to up the ante in 2022,’ comments Holly Klintworth, Director and Head Distiller.

Milk Bar enjoyed a glass or two (or several) as a G&T with Mediterranean Tonic and garnished with orange rind. Other top choices are rosemary or sage. We were immediately taken by its ruby red bold colour. Flavours of French oak, cocoa nibs and strawberry gum round out the palate and heighten the bright strawberry, raspberry, violet and lavender notes. Other botanical notes of Angelica root and pepperberry complete the complex, yet very satisfying gin.

Heartbreak Gin matches the light to medium body of the wine, light acidity and fruit-based flavours. As such, we recommend pairing it with lighter meats, such as duck, lamb and chicken, or even earthy vegetables.

A mainstay for the colder months, Bass & Flinders’ Heartbreak Pinot Gin is a saccharine reminder of the Mornington Peninsula while you’re huddling around a heater or fire pit with friends or loved ones, or even cosying up on the couch with a special someone.

The 2022 Heartbreak Pinot Gin is available in a 700ml bottle for $88 and is now available online or at selected premium bottle shops.
