T20 World Cup: Largest Women’s Sporting Event Ever Comes to Melbourne

The world’s biggest and best cricketers will come together over the next two months when the largest women’s sporting event ever to be held in Australia takes place from Friday, February 21 to Sunday, March 8 2020.

Hosts and defending champions, Australia, will open the International Cricket Council (ICC) Twenty-Twenty (T20) World Cup with a blockbuster first match against India at the Sydney Showground Stadium. Victoria will be home to five pool games involving five national teams: India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, our trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand, and our very own Meg Lanning-led Aussies – all to be staged at St. Kilda’s Junction Oval!

The World Cup will culminate with the final being played under lights at the world’s grandest cricket stadium, the iconic MCG, on Sunday, 8 March – which happens to be International Women’s Day. It is hoped that the final will set a new world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event. To achieve this, the final will need to be a packed house of 93,000 spectators, surpassing the current record of  90,185 set in 1999 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final in Pasadena, California.

One individual who’s roaring to lead the celebrations is pop superstar sensation Katy Perry. She will perform exclusively in Melbourne during both the finals’ pre-game show and post-match commemorations: so expect fireworks! She recently told the ICC website why she’s so looking forward to this visit Down Under, ‘I’m all about celebrating equality and the achievements of women, which naturally happens on a global scale on International Women’s Day. It’s no coincidence that I said yes to performing live at the women’s final on that day.’

‘I hope to bring a unifying electric performance playing some of my most empowering songs for the best cricketers on the planet and some of my greatest fans, as well as unite to support gender equality and empower people to achieve everything that they desire.’

Melbourne has long been heralded as the sporting capital of the world – let’s see if that rings true throughout February and March!

Tickets are available now at t20worldcup.com. All children’s tickets are just $5 and adult prices start from $20.
