Now Open: Melbourne’s first outdoor ice rink

Summer is finally here. That means long days soaking up the rays at the beach, refreshing fruity cocktails by the river and ice skating at the Queen Victoria Market. Say what?! You heard me. Melbourne’s Queen Vic Market has partnered with Air Canada to create Melbourne’s first OUTDOOR summer ice rink. (How does that even work?!)
Vic Naughton, General Manager Australia & New Zealand at Air Canada, says, “Victorians have really embraced our non-stop services to Vancouver, Canada’s spectacular west coast city, together with the fast and seamless connections it provides within Canada, to the USA and beyond. To celebrate, we’re bringing a little piece of Canada to the heart of the city in the form of an iconic winter sport – ice skating.”
Running on market days from the 1–24 December, the Air Canada Ice Rink gives Victorians the chance to change up their festivities Canadian-style. Once you’ve had enough of the buzz and hubbub of Christmas shopping, take to the ice and glide away your troubles. Sessions run hourly and are open to all ages. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door, and everything you need is available for hire.
Once you’ve had your Elsa moment, get a taste of the true Canadian experience and treat yourself to maple syrup ice cream from Geloso Gelateria or try the legendary poutine: a national treasure of French fries, cheese curds and gravy.
Santa*, carols and Christmas workshops will also be part of the Christmas haven at Queen Victoria Market this summer. So grab your jingle bells and skate on down for some wintery, festive fun in the sun.
*Ah, this explains the summer ice rink: it’s a Christmas miracle!
