The Date

We have all been there. Those anxiety-ridden hours before a first date where you’re kinda excited, kinda low-key ready to be subjected to another humiliating round of awkwardness, disappointment and, ultimately, rejection. Swirling a stiff G&T in one hand while picking out a presentable (and clean) shirt – like you’re Anna Wintour – is made ten times easier when you call your best friend for a yarn, and some much-needed support. This is where Melbourne Fringe Festival’s The Date takes place.

Written and performed by Dean Robinson, The Date is an honest queer story that explores various versions of love, sex, dating, and even death. The story follows Justin – a barista with a penchant for beautiful men – as he reflects on his past relationships, dates and hook-ups while summoning the confidence to go on a first date with Malcolm. Encouraged by his best friend over the phone (featuring the vivacious vocals of Megan Scolyer-Gray), Justin wonders how his experiences have shaped who he is today. Finding closure from heartbreak and coming to grips with his past encounters, is Justin ready to take a leap and go on the date?

While Robinson convincingly paints an image of the light-hearted side of gay life, a world abundant with eggplant emojis, Grindr and visceral human contact, his talent also conveys a touching and almost poignant display of loss characterised by the death of Justin’s former partner. Clutching to a cream knitted jumper and asking for a sign to move on is a clear message to everyone that feelings of love and heartbreak resonate with anyone.

An up-and-coming LGBT performer, Robinson brought joy to the audience through his rendition of pop songs, including Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’, but also tested the waters with his initial unapologetic, crude and provocative references to sex.

The Date is a story for the modern age and is playing at The Butterfly Club till Sunday, 30 September.
