Deja View

Back for a second season, Deja View’s creates its own sequel of this successful boutique cinema in Collingwood.

This isn’t a secret. Sequels to epic films are generally dreadful (Grease II anyone?) and the longer a movie tries to milk the cinematic cash cow the worse it gets. But there are a few classic VHS gems that have stolen their way into Seb Godfrey’s heart and he is sharing his joy with us at an über cool warehouse on Smith St, Collingwood.

Showing classic movies in a boutique cinema has long since been a dream of Seb’s. He says “My dad turned our suburban garage into a makeshift movie theatre and I would have friends over for movie nights – popcorn, big lounge chairs – this is where the heart of Deja View stems from” and as such, a VHS fanatic was born.

The cinema itself is heated and blankets are available for next level cosiness. Seating comes courtesy of surplus stock from Modern Times on Smith St. As Ellen Ripley gets intimate with a couple of face huggers, you’ll be kicking back in comfortable plush 1970s leather lounges or puffy memory-inducing arm chairs (Seb says smack bang in the middle of the theatre are two cream-coloured leather armchairs that look big enough to seat 2 per chair – prime viewing and comfort combined, get in quick).

The cinema is licensed, serving Punt Road wines and a selection of brews from Little Creatures brewery. Snacks have an American slant from the John Candybar – junior mints, Reece’s pieces and there’s hot buttered pop corn and themed choc tops, like the ‘Cartouche This’ – a coffee and choc-chip ice cream dipped in chocolate.

The movies on Seb’s VHS playlist are all shown in High Definition, upcoming classic flicks include Aliens, Mad Max 2, Weird Science and Wayne’s World (and stacks more).

There are also some not to be missed special screening events, like the Christopher Walken Evening and ‘Old Pals’, a VHS special for all you skate hounds.
