Melbourne-based film purveyors ReelGood have spent the past eighteen months headhunting outstanding local filmmakers and the screen-art they create. On April 13, they’re going to expose these films in a one-day festival of viewing — setting up the projectors right here in our own backyard.

Over seven hours, ten of Melbourne’s best short indie flicks will be screened at the old Patterson Building in Collingwood, in what will be the inaugural ReelGood Film Festival. These are the works filmmakers whose work has already rolled through Cannes, the Toronto Film Festival and the Charlestown International Film Festival.

Founded by local filmmakers/enthusiasts/ruffian scamps John Roebuck and Jake Clements, the aim of ReelGood is to get people talking about film — encouraging insightful and in-depth discussion while still being relatable to the average film fan. Meaning, without sounding like wankers or resorting to black turtleneck sweaters.

The cultural importance of getting pissed on a Sunday afternoon is also not lost on the ReelGood crew, so the bar will be open all afternoon and night. However, with many of the filmmakers attending themselves, keep yourself tidy if you plan to have a beer and a chat with the talent. Or not — just enjoy the fact that you’re not holed up at Hoyts for the day, and immerse yourself in the experience.
