We Can Be Heroes

Housed behind the RMIT SAB building, Melbourne’s newest sandwich bar Hero is already hitting home runs with the neighbours. Venture down to Stewart street and into the moody space where you get to pick from seven big hearted hero-style baguettes.
Whilst traveling on an eight month sabbatical, owners Eleena & Michael Tan (Brand-Works, The Grain Store, Reading Room Café) found themselves in the delis of Brooklyn, planning a way to bring the US sandwich to Melbourne. In just under four months Michael & Eleena turned a drab concrete space into Hero.
Sandwiches come in a sneaker-style box and with their own hashtag. Options include the #Throwback (meatballs) and #Catcher (shrimp) in either half-size ($7.8) or classic ($11.8). We tried the #Kidroyal – eleven hour slow-roast beef rubbed in hickory sauce, house onion jam and honey dijon, fresh baby spinach topped with house onion rings. The bread was nicely crisp while the generous serving of beef smokey and tender. Onion rings were the salty icing on the cake.
Besides heros there’s also breakfast pockets, hand-rolled Five’n”Dime bagels and maple and chipotle drumettes, which can all be washed down with filter Americano Coffee ($2.80) roasted by St Ali (make it bottomless $4.8).
For Melbourne, that’s a pretty heroic price.
