Travelling Samover Tea House

The cosy Travelling Samovar Tea House, tucked in a quiet corner of Rathdowne Street, represents Bec Kidson, Pascale Sameli and Katya Dibb’s passion for tea. The owners are warm, welcoming and immediately make you feel at home – just like a good cuppa.

The decor is inspired by the Orient – fused with Soviet style. Picture Chinese rosewood furnishings and Russian samovars. Then there’s the wide selection of teas; including Chinese teas, Japanese teas, herbal infusions, Turkish apple and chai. Also on the menu are the staples; coffee and hot chocolate.

The Indian Chai is served in terracotta cups, shaped like small vases. You can take them home after use. This thick cup of chai is a delicious blend of spices and it doesn’t leave an aftertaste. Darjeeling Second Flush Oaks is a smooth and mellow summer tea, best taken black. Turkish Apple is a flavourful combination of fresh apples, hibiscus and rose that leaves your tastebuds with a sweet and tangy taste. Prices are reasonable, in the range of $4 to $20.

The team at Travelling Samovar Tea House are also holding tea tasting classes lead by David Thompson of Larsen & Thompson Teas. Keep updated on their Facebook page. Hearing that the cakes are Katya’s creations, I wanted to go for more but unfortunately I was too stuffed to try. I’ll be coming back for them next time.
