Bar Humbug

Bar Humbug opened in Melbourne in 2005 and comes highly recommended for serving up good, honest pub-fare. Tucked away at a quiet corner of Little Bourke Street, this gastro-bar makes a good spot for late-night hangouts and football fanatics.

The underground bar-restaurant has a rustic charm with old-fashioned brick walls. Priding itself on welcoming and friendly staff, this is that sort of atmosphere that makes you feel particularly warm and cosy. As a burger enthusiast, I picked their signature Humburger ($20), served with cheese, smoked bacon, caramelised onions, 20 tarragon aioli and fries. This dish makes for hearty comfort food. Extremely filling and tasty, you will struggle to make room for the fries.

Also recommended is their signature red wine, 2010 Henschke ‘Henry’s Seven’ GSM ($11). Of course, there’s more than just burgers and red wine on the menu. There are plenty of choices – chicken fajitas ($20), duck ragout ($22), and the steak sandwich ($20). Over at the bar there’s also a decent range of Aussie craft beers on tap.
