Gas Eatery

Back when menfolk around the country were sprouting Shannon Noll-esque tufts of chin hair, women donned Ugg boots with camouflage print shorts and we all documented our emotions about Sunnydale’s demise on Friends Reunited – three sisters where setting up shop in Coventry Street and bringing something a little different to the plates of South Melbourne.

Having all started out at Tartine in Armadale owned by their food-passionate mother, in 2003 Kate, Nikki and Sam Maskiell decided it was time to fly the nest and open Gas Eatery serving up tasty and unusual breakfasts (try finding Middle Eastern brekkie in a café circa 2003), wholesome lunches and hearty take-home dinners.

Fast forward 10 years, the girls and their crew are still serving up classic dishes and have recently revamped the breakfast menu with adding a new slant on old favourites. Stalwarts like their signature Middle Eastern eggs have remained a firm fixture and sit nicely next to the new additions; salted caramel and banana porridge ($12.50) snuggles up to the ‘Vovo’ a French toast brioche filled with rosewater marshmallow and Yarra Valley raspberry jam served with vanilla speckled cream ($15).

There are plenty of choices for savoury enthusiasts too – corn hash scramble ($17.00) or the Gas BLT (the b stands for bacon, beautiful bread and basil). Morning eats transition nicely into lunch fare, including a long chalkboard menu jam-packed with tapas

Gas Eatery has an extensive range of take home meals, caters finger food for fancy functions and if you love their house-made muesli, grab a bag for your own kitchen. The girls have become a food institution in South Melbourne to market goers, morning commuters and lycra-clad types for a decade – three cheers to Gas Eatery being around for many more.
