The Twoks

Melbourne duo The Twoks are regulars on the Melbourne gig circuit and anyone who’s seen them live will have experienced the energy of Xani Kolac on vocals and  violin and Mark Leahy on drums and how awesome they can be to dance to. In fact we liked their track 240 volts so much we used it in our recent White Night video.

This Friday The Twoks return to Melbourne after months of touring and playing the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They’re back at the Northcote Social Club (where they launched their first full length LP Two last November) to debut their new all-instrumental LP Sailing Away.

Xani tell us she and Mark wanted the album to recreate their live sound and energy. “We wanted to make something that sounds exactly like us. We wanted raw, we wanted guts, so we let everything go and just went for being ourselves.”

That meant stepping out of their comfort zone and heading to Head Gap studios with Nao Anzai producing. The band recorded to tape so there were no punch-ins, overdubs and polishing.  And more risk. The result is a largely improvised album.

“In the end we went with our first take because it felt the best. It had all our excitement and anticipation, wrong notes and right notes. It’s chockers with everything that we are because it hadn’t been tampered with.”

The album is many ways marks The Twoks coming full circle. The band originally started as an instrumental project and only slowly added lyrics. After getting requests from the audience for recorded versions of the instrumental tracks, the idea for Sailing Away was born to reflect the band’s origins and current interests.

“Right now, this album is what we have for you. In a few months, it’ll be something different again. I don’t even know what it is – and that excites me!”

The Twoks play the Northcote Social Club with The Nymphs + Canary this Friday 14 June.
