Raw dining at Shoku iku

New raw food café Shoku iku offers a unique, daily rotating menu that’s dependent on what is organically and seasonally available. Owner and holistic nutritionist Yoko Inoue whips up new vegan recipes for her hungry herbivore customers with a choice of large ($15) or small ($10) portions. Served as a mini smorgasbord of sorts, all the options are plated together creating a melody of vitamin rich colours and flavours.

The zucchini and carrot salad with chickpea, miso and tamari dressing was a favourite, as well as the cabbage and apple salad with a plum vinaigrette – both came topped of with a walnut vegetable quiche, basil pesto and a scrumptious buckwheat popcorn that was the icing on the vegan cake.

A chocolate mousse tart ($8) was recommended for dessert. Served with an extra dollop of vegan chocolate and a smear of nut paste, this whipped walnut delight was an unquestionable highlight. Cleverly replacing dairy with almond milk, the cheesecake looked like another winner.

A variety of Superior Smoothies are on offer ($7.50-$8.50) with superfood boosts like bee pollen, goji, noni and several more that certainly require the health benefits legend that sits next to them.

Shoku iku is not a stomping ground for the overly hungry, but a place to find delicious food packed with earthy goodness and intriguing education about whole foods.
