Larder Section

With a decade or two of sandwich eating under my belt, I’ve definitely had my fair share of the age-old meal. I wouldn’t say that I’m a sandwich connoisseur, however, I’m always sniffing around for one that will impress me beyond the average lunchbox grub.  And that’s exactly what Kez Rattray, owner of Larder Section, sets out to provide.

Set in the heart of the CBD on Hardware Lane, Larder Section has placed itself in a prime location for hungry office workers. With a high concentration of sandwich competition, literally feet away, something special was needed to pique people’s attention.

Simplicity is the key to this sandwich bar’s menu: offering a selection of five sandwiches with an average of three ingredients for each. Each sandwich has been designed to create a melody of flavours without overwhelming the senses – served with a homemade sauce of course.

I ordered the Otway Smoked Ham Sandwich ($9.90) based on Kez’s recommendation. It was pleasantly fresh and tasty. Admittedly, it would have been incomplete without the side of tomato sauce. I enjoyed the unique combination of coleslaw pickle and pineapple while happily sipping my long mac ($3.50) at one of their sunny outside tables.

As proud supporters of local suppliers, they source their organic sourdough from La Madre. And for the low carb and gluten free crowd; you have a choice of gluten free bread or mixed leaves.  Personally, I would have liked a third bread choice of multigrain for a healthier option.

With a unique, minimalist approach to toppings and free range ham and chicken options, you can skip the premade counter lunch and try something a little different with a boutique sandwich experience.
