Johnston Street Milk Bar

Tucked away under the train line on Johnston St is a milk bar with a little more on offer than your average corner store. Johnston Street Milk Bar is in fact a café and nightspot complete with a gallery space, ping pong table and sprawling open air courtyard.

Books and records litter the coffee table in the inside dining area, giving it the air of a well loved lounge room and art and blackboards festoon the walls. The courtyard backs onto a bar complete with armchairs and it’s easy to see how late nights could turn into early mornings drinking under the statue of David propped jauntily against the fence.

For breakfast, a very reasonable $8 dollars buys you eggs how you like them on toast with all the usual accompaniments a steal at $1 a pop. Later in the day the pizza menu provides a host of variations of perhaps the world’s most shareable food and also comes cheap with beers and pizzas ($5 each on Wednesday nights.)

Open from seven in morning till late (around 11) most nights, the Johnston St Milk Bar is bound to attract more than just the locals hopping off the train each day. We’ll definitely be popping in again, and not just because we love a good milk bar!
