Supping Super Soup

I know what you’re thinking: ‘Another Japanese café’, right? While that may be a valid reaction for some rather unimaginative places, Brimm CC’s Japanese Organic Cafe is working hard at creating a niche for itself and pleasing as many people as possible in the process.

This café, run by Japanese people who would greet you with a hug if they could, originally served organic soups and sushi rolls, later adding Japanese items at the behest of their customers. The result: an organic Japanese cafe that also serves soup.

The small interior is minimalistic and filled with natural light, a few small tables, artwork and toys. The comprehensive menu features a lunch and dinner menu, Japanese dishes, sets, soup and sets. I was taking a while to decide so asked for the #1 dish, which turned out to be the chicken and tomato curry. Yatta! (yay!) I opted for the set with salad ($9.50) and sat down to enjoy the peace and quiet of the friendly little café.

The food was simple, fresh and delicious. The carrot and chicken were flavoursome and soft, the sauce rich – a good hearty meal with super nice service. It’s always refreshing to be in a place that so highly values their customers, and the Japanese conversation in the background – with regular pop-ins from local Japanese to say konnichiwa – almost made me feel like I was in Japan.

Maybe next time I’ll try the hug thing and see how it flies.
