Teensy Tiny T-Roy Browns

Opened a few months ago, T-Roy Browns is billing itself at ‘Melbourne’s smallest café’. Located in the Banana Alley Vaults on Flinders Street, I’m not sure if T-Roy pips Switchboard for teensiest java joint, but who’s measuring?

Small and cozy, the sloped concrete roof of the vaults give the place a cave-like feel, while owner Troy Brown (aka T-Roy) has kitted out his space-challenged cafe with milk crates, hanging lights, records and a loyalty chalk board, where regulars literally chalk up their names. Outside are tables where punters can take in the morning sun and either smugly or guiltily watch people going to and from next door’s 24 hour gym.

Troy worked as an Accounts Manager for Atomica before he got sick of being a bean counter and decided to open his own place, and he’s keepiong things simple ‘so I can concentrate on making good coffee’. Troy uses an Atomica blend for espresso and a rotating single origin, while food options consist of three different types of jaffles – Italian, Greek and French.

Small, fun and friendly, T-Roy Brown mightn’t be the biggest baddest boy in town, but they serve a helluva cuppa joe in a cave. And that’s pretty awesome.
