Catherine Cohen: Come For Me

Catherine Cohen takes the crown when it comes to unadulterated, razor-sharp and unforgettable comedy. Taking the Athenaeum Theatre by absolute storm over two nights on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 November, the critically acclaimed comedian, author and actor was draped in metallic silver and wowed an audience packed with fans and begrudged straight boyfriends. The show Come For Me was a cabaret-style pleasure trip into Catherine Cohen’s glamorous aura and on-point take on the world at large.

Known for her Netflix comedy special, The Twist …? She’s Gorgeous in 2022, Catherine Cohen has established somewhat of a cult following in Australia. The target audience gives tote-wearing, Fitzroy-located, latte-sipping girlies. Come For Me is more of that, and fans – newcomers alike – will relish in the effervescent vulnerability, positive self-talk, dysfunctional stories, nonsensical yet musing poetry and hilarious oversharing. The show opens with ‘The Void’ and then descends into a stream of consciousness about relationships, the pandemic, therapy, flying first class and touches on Americanisms – including being from Texas, republicans and religion. Catherine Cohen taught me many things. Top of mind being ‘belly access’, a privilege reserved for couples who have ascended to the level of comfort whereby one partner can hold their love’s bulging belly. The show then caps off with the brilliant ‘Doing it For my Memoir’ ode.

A star performer with exceptional comedic timing and an array of musical and theatrical talents, Catherine Cohen is a phenomenon that graces the stage with uncouth elegance. Fans of Patti Harrison and Jordan Firstman would no doubt become obsessed with Catherine Cohen – and you will no doubt feel like you’re part of her sorority.

A riot from start to finish, Come For Me is astounding.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
