The Princess Bride In Concert – extra show added!

Inconceivable!

Millennials – and your children – unite, the cult classic The Princess Bride is back on the big screen over two big weekends. With not only a live orchestra but also a Q&A with Westley himself (Cary Elwes), both screenings at MCEC’s Plenary Theatre this Sunday are selling so fast, an additional show has now been added at Hamer Hall on Friday August 4th.

Presented by Symphonic Cinema, guitarist Slava Grigoryan is teaming up with the Inconceivable Orchestra to perform Mark Knopfler’s classic score, and to rekindle audiences with Rob Reiner’s beloved cult classic and its one-liners, sword fights, chases, escapes, miracles and of course one-true-loves. Peter Falk narrates the comedy-action-romance that follows Buttercup (Robin Wright) – a beautiful maiden who falls in love with her farm boy, Westley. When Westley is kidnapped one day and presumed dead, Buttercup prepares for a life of misery. Several years later, engaged to the cartoonishly evil Prince Humperdink (Chris Sarandon), she herself is kidnapped and a mysterious Man in Black is suddenly at her rescue.

The film, packed with a heavyweight all-star cast including Wallace Shawn, Mandy Patinkin, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Fred Savage and André the Giant, originally received an underwhelming reception upon its cinematic release in 1987. It went on to gain its cult classic status once released into the VHS market, and has since grown to be one of the most quotable and most entertaining family films of all time. If you haven’t heard a friend recount Mandy Patinkin’s career-defining line with his thick Spanish accent, ‘My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.’ – then you are not friends with the right people.

If it’s a film you want to reconnect with, a film you want to introduce to your children, or a film you want to experience for the first time to stop everyone’s reactions of horror when you confess you haven’t seen it – experiencing The Princess Bride with the power of a full symphony orchestra will make it a truly unforgettable experience. It is a rare gem of cinema that still holds up even thirty-five years later.
