Romeo and Juliet

‘…through impatience, lust, revenge, love, passion, violence, and a series of simple accidents, Shakespeare constructs one of the greatest tragedies ever written.’ – says Peter Evans, Director of Bell Shakespeare’s latest production of Romeo and Juliet. There are few who are unfamiliar with the tale of the star-crossed lovers, whether you’ve read the play at school, picnicked at a production in the park or watched one of the, surprisingly few, on-screen reproductions.

Performing at the Arts Centre’s Fairfax Studio from 14 to 29 July, the production is an intimate experience, reminiscent of the space where the play was first performed all those centuries ago. A clever interplay of lighting, costumes and movement create an atmosphere that was all at once lively and moody. Of particular note is the choreographed masquerade party (be on guard for audience participation) and the moments of intense swordplay. Bare stages ensure every seat has a clear view as Evans’ company of well-cast players throw everything at their performances – literally launching themselves at the floor – and is riveting to see it play out in this up-close and personal performance.

Jacob Warner and Rose Riley play the ill-fated lovers, both bringing a youthfulness to a reckless love, while exploring layers of maturity in their portrayals. Warner plays Romeo as a helpless romantic, charming and affable, with a touch of dorkiness. Riley’s Juliet is headstrong and bold, torn between leaving behind her childhood and growing up to become ‘a wife’. This Juliet is no shrinking violet. She is intelligent, articulate and knows what she wants. It is she who steers their dizzying love with passion and ferocity, while a helpless Romeo cannot help but be utterly transfixed.

Outside of the leads, Lucy Bell’s doting Nurse and Blazey Best’s lewd Mercutio are particular standouts. Bell perfectly executes the maternal love her character has for young Juliet. She smothers and embarrasses, protects and grieves with utter conviction. Best’s Mercutio is loud and unapologetic. Quick to anger, his fiery spirit is ultimately his undoing. Both give highly energetic portrayals coupled with a physicality that elevates their performances and steals many laughs.

Romeo and Juliet is not a love story. It is a story of passion, that which drives love, hate and grief, that which can destroy if left unchecked, but that which is a force that will not be ignored. If you were bored by Shakespeare in school, I encourage you to see a live performance. While he is not for everyone, the stage is where his plays come to life, not just in a figurative sense, but in the portrayals. Actors’ performances explore the nuances in each character and the situation they face. The emphasis on the words that are spoken, the tone in which they are delivered, mean that no two interpretations are the same. And that is the difference.

Humour, intensity and raw performance, Evans’ Romeo and Juliet is a must-see.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
