Once: The Musical

Prepare to be captivated by Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s highly acclaimed production of the dazzling Broadway hit Once at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre.

Once is an emotionally stirring tale that delves into the complexities of two individuals navigating the aftermath of past relationships. It explores how they find solace and healing in each other’s presence. While this may be the essence of the story, there is a wealth of depth and nuance to be discovered within its intricate details, with deceptively simple dialogue that holds profound truths capable of eliciting unexpected laughter or heartache. The main characters of Girl and Guy form the central axis around which numerous other moments unfold and evolve. Stefanie Caccamo and Toby Francis portrayed the lead roles in the sold-out season of Once in Sydney, and have returned to captivate audiences once again. Their performances are nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing powerhouse vocals and an undeniable connection that leaves a lasting impact. Their ability to bring the characters to life with such depth and authenticity is a testament to their immense talent and dedication. Audiences can expect to be moved by their performances as they navigate the complexities of love, loss, and healing on stage.

At the heart of Once lies its remarkable music, a true catalyst for the connection between the main characters. The production demands an extraordinary level of talent from its performers, going beyond singing, acting, and dancing to encompass playing the entire score. The ensemble of gifted actor-musicians assembled to bring this story to life is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Accompanying Francis and Caccamo on stage is the esteemed stage and screen actor Jay Laga’aia (Nim’s Island and Star Wars) joined by an impressive line-up of Australia’s finest actor-musicians, including Pavan Kumar Hari, Clay Crighton, Victoria Falconer, Ruby Clark, Anthony Craig, Abe Mitchell, Jennifer Trijo, Rupert Reid and Patrick Schnur.

Director Richard Carroll describes Once as one of the most demanding musicals for the artists involved. “It requires so much from its actors. Not only do they need to authentically portray this beautiful story night after night with truth, passion, and humour, but they also need to sing these exceptional songs with the same qualities … and on top of that, they are their own band, so each one of them must be an exceptional instrumentalist. I am in awe of the talents of the cast and creative team we have assembled, and I cannot wait for Melbourne audiences to witness their remarkable performances.”

The narratives are skillfully constructed and elevated through the musical arrangements, intricately intertwined with the dialogue. A simple motif played on the violin finds its echo in the mandolin, a melodic song gains support from the low drone of an accordion, and a soul-stirring solo performance is amplified by a harmonized chorus of guitars. Penned by the talented duo of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, whose music and lyrics graced the acclaimed 2007 film that inspired the musical, the musical score serves as the beating heart of this theatrical production.

This enchanting tale of unexpected love enthralled audiences during its premiere at Sydney’s Eternity Playhouse in 2019, receiving rave reviews and sold-out shows with nightly standing ovations. Once holds the distinction of being the only Broadway show with music that has garnered an impressive array of awards, including the Academy Award, Grammy Award, Olivier Award and Tony Award for Best Musical and it’s clear to see why!

Once showcases the book by esteemed Irish playwright Enda Walsh, orchestrations by Martin Lowe, and music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. The Darlinghurst Theatre Company production is directed by Richard Carroll, with musical direction by Victoria Falconer, movement direction by Amy Campbell, production design by Hugh O’Connor, lighting design by Peter Rubie, and sound design by Dylan Robinson.

If you’re a fan of films such as A Star is BornCrazy Heart, and Purple Rain, then Once is an absolute must-see for you!
