MICF: The Briefing

If there’s one thing Australians love to make fun of, it’s American news and politics. What’s better is when an American does it so we don’t feel bad about laughing. Hilariously controversial, Melissa McGlensey’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival show The Briefing is clever with a potent amount of tongue-in-cheek humour.

A seasoned pro, McGlensey is an American comedian (Completely Improvised Survivor, The Big HOO-HAA!, Soothplayers) and writer (The OnionReductress). She has a strong background in improv, which definitely complements her performance in The Briefing. McGlensey is smart, showcasing her quick wit, satirical style and acting background throughout this comedic show.

The Briefing takes the audience through a press conference of a right-wing politician. McGlensey takes on the alter-ego of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a politician who works with Trump. McGlensey is accompanied by Felix MacFarlane, who plays Gumbo, Sanders’ assistant.

This exceptional performance is interactive. The audience is encouraged to yell out things and heckle McGlensey throughout. Towards the end of The Briefing, audience members are invited to ask questions of the “politician”. This improvised Q&A section is where McGlensey really showcased her knowledge of American politics with her satirically quick-witted responses.

With copious amounts of dark humour, The Briefing is a unique way to perform comedy – and the audience loved it!

Even if you aren’t into American politics, the majority of The Briefing jokes will still land, while some may go over the heads of even the most prepared fan. Expect lots of deep-belly laughs and a few “ooohs” as you try to hold in laughter at some of the darker moments.

Not one to be missed, The Briefing will be at Campari House until Sunday 23 April – don’t forget to bring your questions and your heckle hats.
