Indulge yourself in The Night of the 12th, a captivating new French thriller in cinemas nationwide on Thursday 13 October. Skilfully written, director Dominik Moll punctuates traditional cops-and-culprits storytelling with a sobering commentary on gendered violence and unsolved crimes. Mysterious, superbly acted and undeniably gripping, this is likely to be one of the best French films of 2022.

Bastien Bouillon stars as Yohan Vivés, a police investigator who comes across an unsolved case. Many questions emerge – Who did it? What is the motive? Why? – and what begins as a routine, by-the-book investigation morphs into a nagging, all-encompassing obsession. The net of possible suspects grows with each interrogation and Yohan is plagued by doubt and questions. Only one thing is sure – the crime occurred on the night of the 12th.

Adapted from Pauline Guéna’s novel, 18.3 – une année â la PJ (translated to 18.3 – A Year With the Crime Squad), this film is a fictional retelling steeped in a powerful human story and social commentary. The book – and movie – explore that one case that hurts police officers more than the others. Another theme weaved throughout is the relationship between men and women. While most officers are men, Lula Cotton-Frapier is a gem as Clara (the victim).
