Cultivating an eclectic and aesthetically pleasing collection of artwork, photography and sculpture for one’s home sounds like an aspirational and enjoyable experience. Depending on one’s vibe, it may be a hefty pursuit. Fear not: The Affordable Art Fair returns to Melbourne after a two-year COVID hiatus on Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 September 2022, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The Fair is back in the cultural capital of Australia and will showcase artwork from more than 40 Australian and international galleries. Art lovers will have the chance to peruse thousands of pieces from emerging and established artists that suit every taste, space and spend. Pieces come with a price tag ranging from $100 to a humble $10,000.

‘Our artists have been busy in their studios, and we have thousands of artworks ready to find happy homes,’ says Stephanie Kelly Gordine, Affordable Art Fair’s Regional Managing Director, Asia Pacific.

‘Now more than ever, we need to support our art ecosystem and the events industry to create those magical moments when people fall in love with art,’ adds Gordine.

So, what can you expect to see? Milk Bar has assembled some of our favourites. On display is the coveted Martinich&Carran (based on Victoria’s Surf Coast), Fenton & Fenton (based in Prahran), Studio Gallery, founded by Melbourne artist Kerry Armstrong, all-female collective Tits & Co and The Gallery Eumundi from Queensland. The Young Talent Victoria exhibition will showcase the careers of five local creatives, who are all under the age of 35. This year, be dazzled by the work of Mark Chu, Liam O’Neil, Tegan Iversen, Miranda Smith and Alice Oehr, who returns for a second year.

Other Fair highlights include the Creative Hub, where visitors will get a first-hand view of artists in action. Each day Australian creatives will present their body of work of oil paintings, watercolours and life-size Art ATM by Jackie Case.

Founded over 20 years ago, the Affordable Art Fair revolutionised the art scene with its fun and accessible approach to art appreciation. Head down to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and awaken your inner art critique and art buyer.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
