Provocative, outrageous and a lot of fun, Radu Jude’s Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn is the Romanian hit comedy that has Melbourne cinephiles talking. The film aims to remove the halo parents, students and the community cast on teachers as asexual, moral beings and peels back their deepest, private desires.
Winner of the prestigious Golden Bear at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival, the story follows Emi (Katia Pascariu), a schoolteacher whose career and reputation is threatened when a personal sex tape featuring her is leaked to the internet. Forced to meet the disapproving parent circle demanding her immediate resignation, Emi fights back in a comical tribunal, refusing to submit to the pressure.
The film is set in three loosely connected threads: a walk in Bucharest; a playful essay on obscenities; and an incendiary comic confrontation. What works for Bad Luck Banging is that it takes the reins of many contemporary issues – misogyny, sex-shaming, censorship and bigotry – to create a compelling, honest and hilarious dialogue between the characters. In a period of uncertainty, this pandemic-based narrative confronts some of the most pressing societal issues in a big and bold way.
The film was developed during the pandemic. Rehearsals were conducted via Zoom and the crew (and at times, cast members) wore masks. Further serving as a “time capsule”, certain scenes show empty restaurants, out-of-date signage and empty streets.
‘The film was supposed to be contemporary, and the masks were part of our daily life, and I wanted to capture this, to find the anthropological aspect of mask-wearing,’ comments Radu.
