Sink: Simona Castricum X Carla Zimbler

After a series of delays due to Melbourne’s lockdowns, Sink finally descended and wowed a near-packed crowd at Arts House. On stage till 4 December, the visionary Simona Castricum and Carla Zimbler conjure up a performance that blurs a sonic and spatial experience.

For festivalgoers and those into the underground music scene, you may be no stranger to Simona Castricum’s stadium techno energy. The best way to digest Sink is to think big space/small space: big picture stadium beats, percussion, light and visual projection performed in an intimate, yet wholly present small space. The conflict between the two created a truly transportive experience.

Castricum commands the room from the drum set and a suite of percussion instruments beneath a neat tangle of white ropes that hang from the ceiling. Images of Melbourne are then projected onto the rope.

As a queer percussive and visual exploration, Castricum draws on her background in architecture and weaves imagery of Melbourne to destabilise normative binary frameworks of the city, challenging the rigidness, the cold, the grid-like beast to re-imagine it as a fluid structure.

Experimental, explosive and enveloping, Sink will make you bop, make you reflect and make you consider the spatial–social forces that one encompasses in our urban sprawl.
