Wilkommen! After a brief COVID-related delay, the German Film Festival 2021 is back, and we couldn’t be happier. From Thursday 17 June to Sunday 4 July, Palace Cinemas will showcase 30 of the finest Germanic movies, a number of which are screening for the first time outside the motherland. Milk Bar is here to hit you up with our shortlist of crowd-pleasing flicks.

In some ways, Berlin is the main character in several films in this year’s festival. Directed and starring Daniel Brühl, Next Door toys with the idea of celebrity prowess, privilege and the movie-actor scene. Nothing short of schadenfreude, this dark comedy revolves around an actor whose day is completely ambushed by a stranger with ulterior motives.

Another Berlin-based flick is Berlin Bouncer. The documentary tells the story of Berlin’s transformation from the divided, post-war city it was to the hedonistic, party metropolis capital it is today. A vibrant doco, this one is for those who are fascinated by club culture and reaching adulthood at the age of 50.

Exile is your quintessential German drama/thriller. After a frustrating day of honest work, Kosovo-born pharmaceutical engineer Xhafer (Mišel Matičević) returns to his ho-hum suburban haus to find that someone has hung a dead rat on his gate. From there, cultural and psychological tensions come to play, pitting husband against wife, and the line between the real and the imaginary blur.

If you’re a fan of WhiplashThe Audition may be up your alley. Nina Hoss stars as an austere violin teacher who becomes obsessed – literally – with her pupil’s progress in the lead-up to his exam and performance. Compelling and engrossing, director Ina Weisse masterfully conveys how discontentment within us can poison everything we touch.

Then there’s Electric Girl. Starring Victoria Schulz, the fantasy, coming-of-age story follows Mia, a young woman who works in a bar in Hamburg, but by day she plays Kimiko, a Japanese anime heroine, and as her workload increases, she unwittingly begins to embody the super heroine. Using a vibrant mix of live-action scenes and animation, Electric Girl deep-dives into mental health issues and the desire to save the world.

To celebrate the re-opening of cinemas, Milk Bar is giving away 10 FREE double passes to this year’s festival. All you need do is email ross@milkbarmag.com with the subject line ‘German Film Festival ticket giveaway’ and include your name, email and the movie you are desperate to see.

Good luck!

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
