Mardi Gras at The Moldy Fig

Did you know that ‘Mardi Gras’ translates to ‘Fat Tuesday’? I had no idea either. Apparently it’s a ritual of eating rich, fatty foods the last night before the Lenten season (read: six weeks of fasting).

Now regarded as a national holiday in many European countries, people come together in vivid, traditional colours of purple, green and gold; dressing up for eccentric parades and indulging in all sorts of feasts and ruckus. Regardless of whether you plan on partaking in fasting this Lent, The Moldy Fig has you covered for your Fat Tuesday.

The trusted Lygon Street local is offering up a Mardi Gras feast for the eyes, belly and soul on Tuesday, 25 February. Think bottomless rounds of FREE Southern soul food accompanied by New Orleans-inspired new age jazz from live bands like The Bird Conference and Willow Jam.

I mentioned feasts earlier, and mother–daughter owner duo Dorelle and Vivian have blessed us with a menu that will keep you full all the way through to Easter. Expect to see dishes like your classic gumbo, to Natchitoches pies (a Native American Indian pie introduced to Lousiana in the 1700s) and King Cake (an iced, sweet cinnamon bread decorated in Mardi Gras colours).

Now we can’t forget other Mardi Gras traditions like the infamous beads and dancing! All the dancing! If you need some liquid courage to hop on the d-floor, The Moldy Fig has you covered with drinks from KAIJU!, Abita, Varichon & Clerc and New Orleans local Southern Comfort.

Entrance to the event is free, so at this point you really have no excuse – get your best purples, greens and golds on and laissez les bon temps rouler
