The Lavazza Italian Film Festival turns the big 2-0 this year! So, let’s split a prosciutto pizza and may the Aperol spritzes flow as we delve into the 2019 programme. Milk Bar is here to help you select from the 26 best contemporary cinematic offerings Italy has to offer! The Festival kicks off on Thursday, 19 September and will run till Wednesday, 16 October at select Palace Cinemas.

Bangla is a light, breezy and feel-good romantic comedy that is sure to entertain. Director Phain Bhuiyan paints a different – multicultural – picture of Rome through the love story of his two characters; Phain (played by himself), a twenty-two-year-old Muslim boy of Bangandelshi origin, and Italian-born Asia (Carlotta Antonelli). A case of opposites attract, their path to happiness is challenged by familial expectations and beliefs.

Dreaming of the Mediterranean? An Almost Ordinary Summer is the scenic seaside-set, idyllic film for you. Set with the beautiful backdrop of the crystal waters of il mare, the film centres on two very different families occupying the same house over the summer. The aristocratic, open-minded Castelvecchios butt heads with the working-class Petagnas and when an unexpected engagement is announced, all bets are off. Chaos and catastrophe rule!

The closing night masterpiece is Pavarotti. Director Ron Howard’s highly anticipated biopic is presented as an access-all-areas doco that looks back at the life, relationships and remarkable career of the world’s most legendary tenor. Expect to be wowed by never-before-seen footage, concert performances and intimate interviews – you’re bound to fall in love with him all over again!

Desperate to relive your very own Call Me By Your Name scenario? Or do you just need a warm hug from Nonna? If both are unattainable, the next best thing is the Italian Film Festival. To celebrate, Milk Bar is giving away 5 FREE double passes. All you need to is email ross@milkbarmag.com with the subject line ‘Lavazza Italian Film Festival ticket giveaway’ and include in the body of your email your name, your postal address and the film you want to see.

Good luck!
