Tucked away in the heart of the CBD is one of Melbourne’s best-kept-secret Italian establishments. That place is Massi. Known for their clean and polished fit-out, the attentive and welcoming staff, and a killer wine list, Massi are regarded as leaders in Italian fine dining. Massi’s ethos to all things food is simple: modern, yet fiercely traditional while sourcing local produce.

Here are our recommendations for a sumptuous dinner at Massi:

To begin, oysters marinated in a champagne shallot vinaigrette was a splendid decision. Depending on your appetite (and how much you want dessert), I’d probably select no fewer than two each. The Antipastini options are bountiful, but the standouts were the baked meatballs with tomato sugo, the arancini ‘del giorno’ and a buffalo mozzarella and zucchini salad. No words can give that particular salad justice. Fresh, tangy and flavoursome while remaining light on the palette – it simply made our hearts sing.

The ante was upped when it came to pastas and mains. We ordered the pappardelle, which was thrown together with fall-off-the-bone braised osso buco, tomato rage and pangrattato. If it sounds a little much for you (which it isn’t, I can assure you), the ricotta gnocchi served with braised lamb shoulder, zucchini and peas is an excellent alternative. For Secondi, the pan fried pork cutlet, confit cheek, caramelised apple and grapes is simply mouth-watering. Massi’s dessert game is real and their cannoli are one of their big draw cards. One bite into the golden-brown crunchy exterior and you’ll be hooked!

A firm believer in reducing our environmental footprint is New York Times bestselling author and zero-waste crusader Sarah Wilson. Penning Simplicious Flow, Wilson will host a special event dinner at Massi on Thursday, 16 May. For $88 per person, diners will be treated to an array of fresh and delicious, sugar-free dishes that create zero waste while sipping on sustainable wines from Tasmania. Learning how to introduce simple changes to your life to save the environment and your wallet never tasted better!

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
