Don’t Judge Me!

We are often told never to judge. Don’t judge your friends, family or colleagues. Tom Casamento thinks otherwise. Judgement is a natural state of mind and we should all indulge ourselves. His cabaret/comedic hybrid show Don’t Judge Me! is one that combines pre-existing and newly written music along with his vocal talent’s to show audience members, just how fun judgements can be.

The performance follows Casamento as he dons a variety of small costumes – mainly consisting of a singular, defining item – as he explains to viewers the many judgements he has made on the individuals in his life. This includes: his Offspring-mourning aunt, the stereotypical but emotionally manipulative The Voice contender, a creepy stalker on the bus, the annoying over-enthusiastic Woolies co-worker, and his grandmother as she lives out her karaoke dreams.

The show itself is exceptionally written – humorous, crude and tastefully mocking, it’s a perfect balance of pop culture references and modern day relatability. However what breathes life into the show itself is Casamento’s exceptional performance and portrayal of his characters. One of the best examples that showcase his talents as a comedian is when the keyboard drops off during one of his performances, instead of standing and twiddling his thumbs, he uses these few minutes to provide some quality improvisation during the wait.

However my favourite song was definitely an original that Casamento had written about the overly keen cashier at every supermarket. As someone who has worked in similar situations – which could also be said for a good portion of the audience members – this small number had my partner and I clutching our sides with hysterics throughout the entire thing.

Don’t Judge Me was a cabaret that made me laugh until I cried. It’s unique but a down-to-earth take on human behaviour and culturally jovial references were perfectly laced between its musical ensembles. Despite being a long-term Woolies worker, Casamento has a flair for performance and a knack for a plethora of different impersonations. It’s clear to see throughout his routine that his natural given aptitude for comedy and music will have us all kicking to see him on stage again.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
