Are you looking for a mid-week gig filled with pints of craft beer and melodic tunes? Then look no further Jess Locke’s gig at The Workers Club this Wednesday, 5 December. The Melbourne singer-songwriter takes the stage and will perform her newly released singles, ‘My Body Is An Ecosystem’ and ‘Nothing At All’, to an intimate crowd.

Hot off the heels of her acclaimed 2017 album Universe – with bona fide hits ‘Drive to Drink’, ‘Violent Turn’ and personal favourite, ‘Dangerous’ – Locke is back with dreamy guitar-pop songs that are destined to land on your summer road trip track-list.

The first single from Locke’s new 7” vinyl, ‘My Body Is An Ecosystem’, is about the sometimes staggering disconnect between our mind and body. She comments: “This song is about those times when you look at yourself in the mirror and see a stranger – someone a little older than you thought you were, more fragile, more cracked … I guess it’s about falling short on our own expectations of ourselves insides and out and how terrifying that can be.”

‘Nothing At All’ speaks to the very real truth that people often voice, but fail to improve the silence. Locke previews this track is about politics and perspective, “it’s about the way complex issues are frequently reduced to simple slogans, how decisiveness is applauded and ambiguity frowned upon … The chorus of the song is about the way we live in moral and political bubbles in which like-minded people argue amongst themselves over nuances rather [than] interacting with people that would actually challenge their ideas.” In other words, the overall message of the song is “shit’s complicated”. And, geez, often that’s the case.

Be among the first to catch Jess Locke at her performance at the Workers Club this Wednesday.
