From the sandstone villas of Tuscany to the pristine beaches of the Amalfi Coast comes the Lavazza Italian Film Festival 2018. Kicking off in cinemas nationwide, the Melbourne ‘boot’ of the journey graces screens at select Palace Cinemas from Thursday, 13 September to Sunday, 7 October. So grab a biscotti, an aperitivo or a spritz as we dive right into the best of Italian cinema.

Expect to see a bigger selection of film this year. The programme comprises 37 feature films and 2 short films, so fall in love with outlandish comedies, gripping dramas and heart-warming romances. Here are Milk Bar Mag’s recommendations:

For comedies, you can’t go past My Big Gay Italian Wedding, a hilarious and chaotic trip to the altar as a young man rocks conservative village views with the announcement of his nuptials. An alternative is winner of Best Comedy, Actress and Actor at the 2018 Nastri d’Argento Awards, Like a Cat on a Highway which tells the story of two parents united in their quest to stop their 13-year-old children from dating each other. But when did a clash of classes ever stop affairs of the heart?

Happy as Lazzaro is this year’s darling. Beloved by audiences in Cannes, director Alice Rohrwacher’s enchanting film explores themes of love, loss and compassion while set to the backdrop of an idyllic Italian summer. Another choice in the drama category is The Girl in the Fog, an enthralling thriller based on the best-selling novel of the same name, which follows a detective and his investigation around the sudden disappearance of a young girl.

For dog lovers, Dogman calls your name. The compelling crime thriller is based on a true story and stars many four-legged cast members. It features a gentle dog lover driven to take a stand against a petty criminal and former boxer. Meanwhile, Blessed Madness tells the story of a man, a seller of religious paraphernalia, who is dumped by his wife and his journey in online dating, spurred on by his brazen employee.

To celebrate, we are excited to share 5 FREE double passes to the Italian Film Festival! All you need do is email ross@milkbarmag.com with the subject line ‘Italian Film Festival ticket giveaway’ and include in the body of your email your name, your postal address and the film you want to see.
