The Sydney Film Festival is the premier cinematic experience for Sydneysiders and your chance to discover the most ground-breaking, entertaining and inspiring films. Get ahead of the cinema game and be among the first to watch films descended from Cannes, including this year’s recipient of the celebrated Palme d’Or – the biggest prize awarded in world cinema. Milk Bar Mag has jumped on board to provide you our must-see recommendations.

PSA: Fans of Adam Driver should probably stop reading after this paragraph. The Star Wars favourite stars in BlacKkKlansman, the festival’s closing night feature. Also starring Topher Grace and John David Washington, the inventive, funny and angry flick retells the incredible true story of an African-American police officer who successfully infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan.

Palme d’Or winner Shoplifters is Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu’s newest family drama masterpiece about a Japanese family committing petty crimes to survive. Despite dodgy dealings, the low-paid menial labour and bouts of criminal acts, the family come together to take a neglected girl into their dilapidated abode. Delightful, heart-wrenching and unforgettable, Shoplifters is easily one of the big players in this year’s programme. Hurry! Tickets are selling fast.

Looking to the other side of the world, the Icelandic Highlands stir feelings of wanderlust in the best of us. The scenic landscapes, the exotic terrain and the majestic colours set the backdrop for Woman at War, an insanely hilarious film that follows Halla, a 50-year-old woman choir leader turned DIY eco-warrior. Armed with her bow and arrow, she crusades to bring down mega-companies, whom she blames for pillaging her beloved homeland. Beneath the hilarity, though, is a charming story of a person who is forced to choose between her values and her future.

The Sydney Film Festival celebrates 65 years this year, and among the whirlwind of special events, red-carpet openings and panel discussions, is a dedicated film programme devoted to giving you the best the world has to offer.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
